[excerpt] ...

Aisha said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to travel, he drew lots among his wives, and took with him the one whose lot came out. She said: He drew lots among us for a campaign he fought, and my lot came out — so I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after the veil was revealed ... [excerpt] ... And those who were ruined were ruined because of me; and the one who bore the greatest part of the Ifk [slander] was Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul.

Descriptive summary — no verbatim quote — Ibn Hisham / al-Tabari

Descriptive summary (no verbatim quote verified for this section): the classical accounts of the campaign against Banu al-Mustaliq (the well of al-Muraysi', 5 AH) record that the tribe was defeated, the surviving men taken captive, and the women and children distributed among the Muslims as captives; among them was Juwayriyya bint al-Harith, who fell to the share of Thabit ibn Qays and was given a manumission contract (mukataba); the Prophet paid the contract and married her, and the reports note that the tribe's people, seeing their kinswoman honored, embraced Islam. On the return journey the slander of Aisha (the Ifk) occurred, recorded in Bukhari 4141 (excerpt above) and the Qur'anic verses 24:11-20; Ibn Hisham and al-Tabari give the full accounts. Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

The campaign of Banu al-Mustaliq (5 AH) is recorded in the hadith collections and the classical histories: the tribe was surprised at its water source (al-Muraysi'), defeated, and its people taken captive — the women and children distributed per the rules of the spoils (see the entries on 47:4, 8:1/41, and the captives). The captivity of Juwayriyya bint al-Harith and her marriage to the Prophet — after he paid her mukataba — is the episode the classical sources record as the means by which the tribe's captives came to be released, as the tribe's people embraced Islam when they saw their kinswoman's honor. The return journey saw the Ifk — the slander of Aisha by the hypocrites, led by Abd Allah ibn Ubayy — recorded in Bukhari 4141 (quoted in excerpt above) and answered by the Qur'anic verses 24:11-20, which declare the slanderers' punishment (see the entry on 24:4-5 for the related qadhf penalty). The archive reproduces the opening of the narration and the classical frame, without commentary on the reports' evaluation.
