The official Mughal court history Ma'asir-i Alamgiri by Saqi Mustad Khan documents Emperor Aurangzeb's imperial decree of April 1669 (1080 AH) commanding provincial governors to demolish non-Muslim schools and temples throughout the empire, resulting in the documented destruction of the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, the Keshavdeva temple in Mathura, and the Vishveshvara complex.

It is recorded in Ma'asir-i Alamgiri: On the 17th of Dhu al-Qa'dah 1080 AH [April 1669 CE], the imperial farman was issued to all governors and administrators ordering them to demolish the schools and temples of the infidels across all provinces, and to strictly suppress the teaching and public practice of their religious customs... In that same month, reports arrived that the Emperor's officers had demolished the great temple of Benares known as Kashi Vishwanath, and erected a Friday mosque upon its foundation. Thereafter, the renowned temple of Keshavdeva at Mathura was completely leveled to the ground, and its jewel-encrusted idols were brought to Agra and buried beneath the steps of the Mosque of Begum Sahiba so that they might be continually trodden under the feet of the believers.

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

Saqi Mustad Khan's *Ma'asir-i Alamgiri* is the primary, officially sanctioned Persian court chronicle of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (reigned 1658–1707 CE). The chronicler was an eye-witness and imperial secretary. The text details the ideological program of enforcing Islamic orthodox hegemony across northern India through the systematic destruction of newly built and renovated non-Muslim shrines, in accordance with the classical Hanafi rulings compiled under the Emperor's direction in the legal encyclopaedia *al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah* (also known as *al-Fatawa al-Alamgiriyyah*). The ruins of these medieval shrines and the mosques erected over their plinths (such as the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi and the Shahi Idgah in Mathura) remain prominent subjects of contemporary legal and archaeological documentation.
