The prophetic explanation to Abu Dharr at sunset stating that the sun travels until it prostrates beneath the Divine Throne (al-'Arsh) to ask permission to rise, and will eventually be commanded to return and rise from the West. حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِأَبِي ذَرٍّ حِينَ غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ: «أَتَدْرِي أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ؟» قُلْتُ: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ. قَالَ: «فَإِنَّهَا تَذْهَبُ حَتَّى تَسْجُدَ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ، فَتَسْتَأْذِنَ فَيُؤْذَنَ لَهَا، وَيُوشِكُ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ فَلَا يُقْبَلَ مِنْهَا، وَتَسْتَأْذِنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَنَ لَهَا، يُقَالُ لَهَا: ارْجِعِي مِنْ حَيْثُ جِئْتِ، فَتَطْلُعُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا، فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا ذَلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ﴾».

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Dharr when the sun had set: 'Do you know where it goes?' I replied: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'It travels until it prostrates beneath the Throne, and asks permission [to rise], and permission is granted to it. And the time is near when it will prostrate and it will not be accepted from it, and it will ask permission and it will not be granted to it, and it will be told: Return to where you came from, and it will rise from its West. That is [the meaning of] His word: And the sun runs towards its resting place; that is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing [Qur'an 36:38].'

Narró Abu Dharr: El Profeta ﷺ me dijo al ponerse el sol: «¿Sabes adónde va?». Respondí: «Allah y Su Mensajero saben más». Dijo: «Viaja hasta postrarse bajo el Trono y pide permiso [para salir], y se le concede. Pero pronto se postrará y no será aceptado, pedirá permiso y no se le concederá, y se le dirá: Vuelve por donde viniste, y saldrá por su Occidente. Ese es el significado de: Y el sol corre hacia su morada fija; ese es el decreto del Poderoso, el Sabio [Corán 36:38]».

আবু যার (রা.) থেকে বর্ণিত: সূর্যাস্তের সময় নবী ﷺ আবু যারকে বললেন: 'তুমি কি জানো এটি [সূর্য] কোথায় যায়?' আমি বললাম: 'আল্লাহ ও তাঁর রাসুলই সর্বাধিক অবগত।' তিনি বললেন: 'এটি চলতে থাকে যতক্ষণ না আরশের নিচে গিয়ে সিজদাবনত হয়, অতঃপর উদিত হওয়ার অনুমতি প্রার্থনা করে এবং তাকে অনুমতি দেওয়া হয়। আর এমন এক সময় সমাগত যখন সে সিজদা করবে কিন্তু তা গ্রহণ করা হবে না, সে অনুমতি চাইবে কিন্তু অনুমতি মিলবে না; তাকে বলা হবে: যেখান থেকে এসেছিলে সেখানেই ফিরে যাও, ফলে সে তার পশ্চিম দিক থেকেই উদিত হবে। আর এটিই হলো আল্লাহর বাণী: এবং সূর্য তার নির্দিষ্ট বিশ্রামের স্থানের দিকে গমন করে; এটি পরাক্রমশালী, সর্বজ্ঞের নির্ধারণ [কুরআন ৩৬:৩৮]।'

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

سُجُودُ الشَّمْسِ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ سُجُودٌ حَقِيقِيٌّ يَلِيقُ بِهَا، وَالْعَرْشُ مُحِيطٌ بِالْعَالَمِ كُلِّهِ فَهِيَ فِي كُلِّ حَالٍ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ، وَسُجُودُهَا عِنْدَ غُرُوبِهَا هُوَ اسْتِسْلَامُهَا وَخُضُوعُهَا لِأَمْرِ رَبِّهَا.

[EN] The prostration of the sun beneath the Throne is a real, literal prostration suited to its nature. The Throne encompasses the entire cosmos, so in every state the sun is beneath the Throne; and its prostration upon setting is its complete submission and compliance to the command of its Lord.

حدثنا محمد بن يوسف، حدثنا سفيان، عن الاعمش، عن ابراهيم التيمي، عن ابيه، عن ابي ذر رضي الله عنه، قال: قال النبي ﷺ لابي ذر حين غربت الشمس: «اتدري اين تذهب؟» قلت: الله ورسوله اعلم. قال: «فانها تذهب حتى تسجد تحت العرش، فتستاذن فيوذن لها، ويوشك ان تسجد فلا يقبل منها، وتستاذن فلا يوذن لها، يقال لها: ارجعي من حيث جيت، فتطلع من مغربها، فذلك قوله تعالى: ﴿والشمس تجري لمستقر لها ذلك تقدير العزيز العليم﴾». سجود الشمس تحت العرش سجود حقيقي يليق بها، والعرش محيط بالعالم كله فهي في كل حال تحت العرش، وسجودها عند غروبها هو استسلامها وخضوعها لامر ربها.

This narration is a cornerstone of classical Islamic celestial cosmology. Classical exegetes (such as Ibn Kathir and al-Tabari) reconciled this literal description with physical astronomy by explaining that because the Divine Throne (*al-'Arsh*) is the supreme outer boundary enveloping all created celestial spheres, the physical sun is always cosmologically beneath the Throne, performing a literal physical prostration and renewing its daily celestial mandate from God before continuing its orbit.

হাদিসটি ধ্রুপদী ইসলামি মহাজাগতিক ধারণার অন্যতম প্রধান দলিল। ইমাম ইবনে কাসীরসহ প্রাচীন মুফাসসিরগণ এটিকে ব্যাখ্যা করতে গিয়ে উল্লেখ করেছেন যে, যেহেতু আল্লাহর আরশ সমগ্র সৃষ্টিজগত ও আসমানসমূহকে পরিবেষ্টন করে রয়েছে, সেহেতু মহাজাগতিকভাবে সূর্য সর্বদা আরশের নিচেই বিদ্যমান; এবং প্রতিদিন সূর্যাস্তের পর সে আল্লাহর কাছে আক্ষরিক অর্থে আনুগত্যের সিজদা পেশ করে এবং পরবর্তী দিনের জন্য উদিত হওয়ার ঐশ্বরিক অনুমোদন লাভ করে।
