Anas ibn Malik said: Some people from Ukl came to the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam, but the climate of Medina did not suit them, so he ordered them to go to the camels of the sadaqa and drink their milk and urine [as medicine]. They did so and recovered, then they reverted from Islam, killed the shepherds, and drove away the camels. He sent [men] in their pursuit; they were brought back, and he cut off their hands and feet and branded their eyes, and did not cauterize them until they died.

Commentary

Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 5:33

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

[EN] Ibn Kathir, in his exegesis of this verse, mentions the agreed-upon hadith of the Urayna [people] and says: this verse was revealed concerning them and concerning whoever does as they did; and the scholars differed over the ruling on these apostate brigands and over the branding of the eyes, and the apparent [view] is that the ruling of the verse is tied to them and to what the revealed law established of the rulings on the muharibun. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by Ibn Kathir, Tafsir, on 5:33.]

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

The incident of the Ukl/Urayna tribesmen is the occasion the classical exegetes (Ibn Kathir as above; al-Tabari) connect to Qur'an 5:33 (see the separate entry on hiraba): after feigning Islam, the men killed the shepherds and stole the camels; the Prophet ordered the cutting of their hands and feet and the branding of their eyes. The report is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (6801-6802) and Sahih Muslim with variations. The classical jurists debated the details — including whether the punishment of eye-branding was abrogated by the later prohibition of mutilation, and whether the case is to be read as the application of the hiraba penalties or as a specific response to the crime of killing and theft after treachery; Ibn Kathir records that the ruling of 5:33 is tied to the muharibun in general. The report is reproduced here as the classical sources record it, with the classical debate noted, not adjudicated.
