Command to Kill Dogs and the Black Dog as a Devil — Sahih Muslim 1572, 510a
The prophetic decree ordering the general extermination of dogs in Medina, later modified to mandate the killing of all solid black dogs with two spots on the grounds that 'it is a devil (shaytan).'

Narrator: Jabir ibn Abd Allah
Narrated Jabir ibn Abd Allah: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to kill dogs, to the extent that a woman would arrive from the desert with her dog and we would slaughter it. Then the Prophet ﷺ forbade killing them [generally] and said: You must kill the solid black dog with two spots [above its eyes], for it is a devil.'
Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Sayd, no. 2845 (also Sahih Muslim, no. 1570)
Narrator: Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal
Narrated Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Were it not that dogs are a community among communities of creatures, I would have ordered that all of them be killed. So kill from among them every solid black one.'

Classical commentary — Ibn Taymiyya
[EN] The black dog is the devil of dogs, and the Jinn frequently take physical form in its appearance, and likewise in the form of a black cat, because the color black concentrates satanic energies more than other colors and contains the power of heat.

These narrations in Sahih Muslim and the Sunan outline the evolution of rulings on canines in early Islam. Initially, the Prophet commanded a city-wide culling of all dogs in Medina because the Angel Gabriel reportedly refused to enter his dwelling when a puppy was discovered beneath his bed (Sahih Muslim 2104). The comprehensive slaughter was subsequently abrogated (*mansukh*), sparing working dogs used for hunting, livestock guarding, or farming (while keeping a pet dog indoors reduces a Muslim's good deeds by two Qirats daily, per Bukhari 2322). However, the specific mandate to execute solid black dogs (*al-Aswad al-Bahim*) was permanently retained because the Prophet identified them as devils (*Shaytan*) or physical vessels for Jinn.
