Classical commentary — Al-Nawawi
[EN] Circumcision is obligatory (wajib) upon both men and women according to our school (al-Shafi'i), and this was the verdict of many among the Salaf... and the obligatory measure in a woman's circumcision is cutting the minimum part of the skin at the upper part of the vulva resembling a rooster's comb, which is called the clitoris.
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Female circumcision (Arabic: khifad or khafd) was widely practiced in pre-Islamic Arabia and integrated directly into early Islamic jurisprudence. The hadith in Sahih Muslim referencing 'when the circumcised part touches the circumcised part' establishes that early Muslims treated female circumcision as the anatomical norm for free women. Classical jurists divided into two main legal schools on its obligation: the Shafi'i and Hanbali madhhabs classified it as strictly obligatory (wajib) on both males and females alike, while the Hanafi and Maliki schools classified it as a recommended, noble practice (sunnah / makrumah) for women.
