Prohibition of Congratulating Non-Muslims on Religious Holidays — Classical Fiqh

The unanimous classical consensus (Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Taymiyya) across the Sunni schools that congratulating Christians, Jews, or polytheists on their religious festivals (e.g., Christmas, Easter) is strictly forbidden (Haram) and equated with celebrating idolatry and polytheism.

Classical commentary — Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya

[EN] As for congratulating them on the distinct symbols and rites of disbelief, it is strictly forbidden by unanimous agreement (Haram bi-l-ittifaq), such as congratulating them on their holidays and fasts by saying: 'Blessed holiday to you' or 'Congratulations on this festival' and the like. Even if the speaker escapes disbelief by saying this, it is among the forbidden acts; it is equivalent to congratulating a person on prostrating to the cross. In fact, that is a greater sin in the sight of Allah and more detestable than congratulating someone on drinking wine or committing murder.

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

In classical Islamic doctrine regarding loyalty and disavowal (*al-Wala' wa-l-Bara'*), greeting non-Muslims on their religious holidays is treated as an endorsement of disbelief (*Kufr*) and polytheism (*Shirk*). The four classical Sunni schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) uniformly prohibited participation in, selling goods for, or congratulating Christians and Jews on occasions such as Christmas, Easter, or the Jewish New Year. Ibn al-Qayyim recorded that while ordinary secular well-wishing for marriage or health is subject to minor juristic debate, congratulating non-Muslims on explicitly religious holy days constitutes a grave religious offense.
