Al-Qur'an 2:256 (Surat al-Baqara)
Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)
There is no compulsion in religion; truth has become clearly distinct from error. So whoever disbelieves in the taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the firmest handhold, which never breaks. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Classical commentary — al-Tabari
[EN] Abu Ja'far al-Tabari, on His statement 'there is no compulsion in religion': its meaning is — do not compel anyone to enter the religion of Islam, for truth has become clear from falsehood and guidance from error, and whoever enters it does so from evidence and consent; and in the majority view this verse does not abrogate fighting [verses], and the People of the Book were left upon their religion by the jizya. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by al-Tabari, Jami' al-Bayan, on 2:256.]
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Qur'an 2:256 denies compulsion in religion. The classical exegetes (al-Tabari above; Ibn Kathir) read it in connection with the jizya system: the People of the Book are not forced to convert — they may remain in their religion under the pact of protection (dhimma) with the jizya, per 9:29 (see the separate entry). The classical texts also record the occasion reports connected with the verse (e.g., the Medinan women whose children were among the Jews or Christians being pressured in the opposite direction) and note that the majority did not regard the verse as abrogated by the fighting verses, while the polytheists of Arabia — for whom no jizya was accepted and whose choice was between Islam and the sword per the classical reading of 9:5 — are treated separately in the classical literature (see the entry on 9:5). The verse's universality is stated in its own words ('whoever disbelieves in the taghut and believes in Allah'), and the classical commentaries develop it as a statement about the clarity of truth rather than about state coercion, which in the classical law is attached to the dhimma and jizya arrangement for the People of the Book.
