The Verse of the Sword — Qur'an 9:5 آية السيف — القرآن ٩:٥ La Aleya de la Espada — Corán 9:5 সাইফের আয়াত — কুরআন ৯:৫
The command to kill polytheists after the expiry of the sacred months, its internal condition (repentance, prayer, zakat), and the classical reading of it as 'the Verse of the Sword' that abrogated earlier truce verses.
Then, when the sacred months have elapsed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, and seize them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish the prayer, and give the zakah, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Iman, no. 25 (also Sahih Muslim, no. 22)
Narrator: Abd Allah ibn Umar
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, and give the zakah. When they do that, they preserve their lives and property from me except by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah.'
Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 9:5
Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir
[EN] This noble verse is the Verse of the Sword, of which al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim said that it abrogated every covenant, every contract, and every term [of truce] between the Prophet ﷺ and any of the polytheists. And His statement 'kill the polytheists wherever you find them' — i.e., in the land — 'and this is general.' And al-'Awfi narrated from Ibn 'Abbas concerning this verse: 'No covenant or protection remained for any of the polytheists after Bara'ah was revealed.'
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Surat Bara'ah (9) was revealed in the ninth year after the Hijra, following the expedition of Tabuk. Its opening verses (9:1-4) give the polytheists of Arabia with whom treaties had been concluded a four-month grace period; 9:5 addresses what follows its expiry. The classical exegetes record that the verse, known as 'the Verse of the Sword', was held by some (al-Dahhak, and Ibn 'Abbas in reports) to have abrogated earlier verses of pardon and truce, while al-Tabari and others discussed its scope. Two internal qualifications are part of the text itself: the exception clause ('but if they repent, establish the prayer, and give the zakah, then leave their way free') and the following verse (9:6), which commands granting asylum to any polytheist who seeks it so that he may hear the word of Allah, and then escorting him to safety. The hadith of Ibn Umar (Bukhari 25) is the general report of the order to fight until the shahada, with life and property protected upon conversion — 'except by the right of Islam', i.e., the punishments of Islamic law. Classical jurisprudence distinguished, in applying these texts, between the polytheists of Arabia (for whom no jizya was accepted) and the People of the Book (governed by the jizya verse, 9:29; see the separate entry).
