Qur'an

Al-Qur'an 33:57 (Surat al-Ahzab)

Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)

Indeed, those who harm Allah and His Messenger — Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment.

Al-Qur'an 6:108 (Surat al-An'am)

Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)

And do not insult those they invoke besides Allah, lest they insult Allah in transgression without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every nation their deeds; then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.

Commentary

Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 9:12

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

[EN] And from here is derived the killing of whoever insults the Messenger ﷺ, or attacks the religion of Islam, or mentions it with deficiency; and for this reason He said: 'so fight the leaders of disbelief' — i.e., [until] they return from the disbelief and obstinacy they are in. [Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on Qur'an 9:12.]

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

Qur'an 33:57 declares the divine curse upon those who harm Allah and His Messenger — the classical texts treat the verse as the scriptural ground for the sanctity of the Prophet and of Islam itself. The classical derivation of the ruling on insult (sabb) is recorded by Ibn Kathir on 9:12 (quoted above): the killing of whoever insults the Prophet or attacks the religion is taken from the command to fight the leaders of disbelief. The classical monograph on the subject is Ibn Taymiyya's al-Sarim al-Maslul 'ala Shatim al-Rasul, which assembles the reports and the jurists' positions. The sīra records the operational precedents, including the execution of the poet Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf for his lampoons and of the woman who insulted the Prophet in the Khaybar campaign (recorded in the hadith and sīra literature). At the same time, Qur'an 6:108 (quoted above) prohibits the believer from insulting the deities of others — the classical law of sabb therefore runs both ways in the sources: the sanctity of the Prophet and of Islam on the one hand, and the prohibition of counter-insult on the other.
