وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا۟ فِى حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِّثْلُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ جَامِعُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ فِى جَهَنَّمَ جَمِيعًا

And He has already sent down upon you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and mocked, do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation — for then you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell all together.

Y Él ya os ha hecho descender en el Libro que, cuando oigáis las aleyas de Allah que son negadas y ridiculizadas, no os sentéis con ellos hasta que entren en otra conversación — pues entonces seríais como ellos. Ciertamente, Allah reunirá a los hipócritas y a los incrédulos en el Infierno, a todos juntos.

আর তিনি কিতাবে তোমাদের উপর নাজিল করেছেন যে, যখন তোমরা শুনো আল্লাহর আয়াত অস্বীকার ও ঠাট্টা করা হচ্ছে, তখন তাদের সাথে বসো না — যতক্ষণ না তারা অন্য কথায় মগ্ন হয়; নতুবা তোমরাও তাদের মতো হয়ে যাবে। নিশ্চয়ই আল্লাহ মুনাফিক ও কাফিরদের সবাইকে জাহান্নামে একত্র করবেন।

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

وَقَالَ ابْنُ كَثِيرٍ فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ: هَذَا تَأْدِيبٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِعِبَادِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْ لَا يَجْلِسُوا مَعَ مَنْ يَكْفُرُ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهَا، فَإِذَا سَمِعُوهُمْ يُنْكِرُونَهَا أَوْ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ بِهَا فَلْيَقُومُوا مِنْ عِنْدِهِمْ وَلَا يَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ.

[EN] Ibn Kathir, on this verse: it is a discipline from Allah to His believing servants that they do not sit with those who deny and mock the verses of Allah — when they hear them denying or mocking, let them rise from them and not sit with them until they enter another conversation. وقد نزل عليكم فى ٱلكتب ان اذا سمعتم ءايت ٱلله يكفر بها ويستهزا بها فلا تقعدوا معهم حتى يخوضوا فى حديث غيره انكم اذا مثلهم ان ٱلله جامع ٱلمنفقين وٱلكفرين فى جهنم جميعا وقال ابن كثير في هذه الاية: هذا تاديب من الله لعباده المومنين ان لا يجلسوا مع من يكفر بايات الله ويستهزي بها، فاذا سمعوهم ينكرونها او يستهزيون بها فليقوموا من عندهم ولا يقعدوا معهم حتى يخوضوا في حديث غيره.

Qur'an 4:140 commands the believer to withdraw from any gathering in which the verses of Allah are denied or mocked — 'for then you would be like them' — the scriptural ground of the classical rulings on the company of mockers, alongside the mockery verses of Surat Bara'ah (9:65-66; see the entry) and the blasphemy material (33:57; see the entry). The classical exegetes (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir as above) read the verse as a discipline of dissociation: presence with the mockers while they persist makes one like them, and the believer is commanded to rise until the conversation changes. The verse is reproduced with its exact citation and the classical reading.

El Corán 4:140 ordena al creyente apartarse de toda reunión en que se nieguen o ridiculicen las aleyas de Allah — «pues entonces seríais como ellos» — el fundamento escritural de las sentencias clásicas sobre la compañía de los burlones, junto a las aleyas de la burla de Surat Bara'ah (9:65-66; véase la entrada) y el material de la blasfemia (33:57; véase la entrada).
