Al-Qur'an 48:16-20 (Surat al-Fath)

Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)

Say to the Bedouins who were left behind: 'You will be called against a people of severe might; you will fight them, or they will surrender. If you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.' (16) There is no blame upon the blind, nor upon the lame, nor upon the sick [for staying behind]. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger — He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; and whoever turns away — He will punish him with a painful punishment. (17) Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent conquest (18) and abundant spoils they will take. And Allah is Mighty, Wise. (19) Allah has promised you abundant spoils you will take, and He hastened this for you, and withheld the hands of the people from you, and that it may be a sign to the believers, and guide you to a straight path. (20)

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

[EN] Ibn Kathir, on these verses: al-Suddi and others said: the people to whom they are called are the Persians and the Romans; and the verse concerns those who stayed behind from the pledge of satisfaction [Bay'at al-Ridwan]; and Allah mentions the pledge of satisfaction and His praise of the believers for it, and the promise of the abundant spoils with which Allah later opened [the conquests] upon them. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by Ibn Kathir; see also al-Tabari on 48:16-20.]

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

Surat al-Fath was revealed after the treaty of Hudaybiyya (6 AH). Verse 16 addresses the Bedouins who had declined to accompany the Prophet on the expedition to Mecca: they are told they will be called against a people of severe might — the classical exegetes (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir as above) read this as the Persians and the Romans of the later campaigns — and the choice is framed in the text itself: 'you will fight them, or they will surrender.' Verses 17-19 record the Bay'at al-Ridwan (the pledge of the tree), the divine pleasure with the believers, and the promise of abundant spoils — the classical frame of the campaigns that followed (Khaybar, 7 AH; see the entry) and of the classical law of the spoils (see the entries on 8:1/41 and 47:4).
