Al-Qur'an 5:54 (Surat al-Ma'ida)
Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)
O you who believe, whoever of you turns back from his religion — Allah will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, mighty against the disbelievers, striving in the way of Allah, not fearing the blame of any blamer. That is the grace of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Encompassing, Knowing.
¡Oh, creyentes!
Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 5:54
Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir
[EN] Ibn Kathir, on this verse: it contains a threat to the apostates and a warning to them, and the mention that Allah has no need of them — rather He will replace them with those better than them; and this indeed came to pass by divine decree in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, when he fought the people of the Ridda. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by Ibn Kathir; see also al-Tabari on 5:54.]
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Qur'an 5:54 threatens the apostates and announces the community that will replace them — a people described by love, humility toward the believers, severity toward the disbelievers, striving in the way of Allah, and indifference to blame. The classical exegetes (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir) record the connection the classical tradition drew between this verse and the Ridda wars under Abu Bakr (see the entry on the Ridda wars): the verse's warning was read as fulfilled in the campaigns against the apostate tribes. The verse belongs to the apostasy cluster together with 2:217 and 16:106 (see the entries), and the classical commentaries develop from it the description of the believers' character toward the two communities (see also 48:29 and the related verses).
