Al-Qur'an 8:67-69 (Surat al-Anfal)
Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)
It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has prevailed in the land. You desire the goods of this world, while Allah desires the Hereafter. And Allah is Mighty, Wise. (67) Were it not for a decree from Allah that had preceded, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took. (68) So consume of what you have taken as spoils — lawful and good — and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (69)
Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 8:67
Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir
[EN] Ibn Kathir, on this verse: i.e., it was not proper for you to take captives until you had prevailed in the land — that is, until you had inflicted heavy killing upon the disbelievers and weakened them; and the captives of Badr were taken before the [full] crushing, so Allah reproached them for taking the ransom, then made the spoils lawful to them by the other verse. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by Ibn Kathir; see his Tafsir on 8:67.]
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
The verses follow the account of Badr: the Muslims had taken prisoners and accepted ransom, and the classical exegetes (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir) record that 8:67 reproaches the taking of captives before the enemy was crushed, while 8:68-69 confirm the divine pardon and the lawfulness of the spoils — with the classical note that the allowance of ransoming captives was thus established (cf. the Prophet's later ransoming of the Badr captives and 47:4's 'favor or ransom'; see the entries on 47:4 and on the captives). The verse is part of the scriptural frame of the classical law of captives and spoils: the taking of prisoners belongs to the conduct of war after victory, and their disposition — enslavement, ransom, or release — is governed by the imam per the classical law (see the entry on 47:4).
