Qur'an

Al-Qur'an 9:111 (Surat al-Tawba)

Edition: Cairo 1924 (uthmani text, verified via quran.com API)

Indeed, Allah has bought from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise — they fight in the way of Allah, killing and being killed — a promise upon Him, true, in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an. And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your sale, which you have contracted — and that is the great triumph.

Commentary

Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, on 9:111

Classical commentary — Ibn Kathir

[EN] Ibn Kathir, on this verse: He, exalted, informs that He has bought from the believers their lives and wealth for a price that is theirs — namely Paradise — and that is through fighting in His way: they kill His enemies and are killed in His pleasure; and this is the greatest favor and honor. [Summary of the classical position as recorded by Ibn Kathir; see also al-Tabari on 9:111.]

Context

Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.

Qur'an 9:111 — the 'verse of the purchase' — frames fighting in the way of Allah as a contract with God: lives and wealth in exchange for Paradise. The classical exegetes (al-Tabari; Ibn Kathir as above) read the verse as the scriptural celebration of the believers' fighting — killing and being killed — within the frame of the fighting commands (see the entries on 2:190-193, 8:39, and 9:5), and the classical commentaries connect it to the covenant narrative of the earlier scriptures. The verse's terms presuppose the legitimate fighting defined by the classical law of war; it is reproduced here with its exact citation and the classical reading, without added evaluation.
