The Captives of Badr and the Verse of Reproach — Qur'an 8:67–68 أسرى بدر ومعاتبة القرآن في أخذ الفداء قبل الإثخان — القرآن ٨:٦٧-٦٨ Los cautivos de Badr y el versículo de reproche — Corán 8:67–68 বদরের যুদ্ধবন্দী এবং ভর্ৎসনার আয়াত — কুরআন ৮:৬৭-৬৮
The divine reproach in Surat al-Anfal regarding the Prophet taking ransoms for the Meccan polytheist captives of Badr instead of executing them until thorough slaughter/subjugation was established in the land.
It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued and caused slaughter in the land (yuthkhina fi-l-ard). You desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Were it not for a decree from Allah that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took [of ransoms] by a great punishment.

Narrator: Umar ibn al-Khattab
Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: 'What is your view concerning these captives?' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are our cousins and kinsmen; I suggest taking ransoms from them...' But I [Umar] said: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! I do not hold Abu Bakr's view. Rather, I suggest enabling us to strike their necks: hand 'Aqil over to Ali to strike his neck, and hand so-and-so over to me to strike his neck...' But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ preferred what Abu Bakr said. The next morning, I came and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr sitting weeping. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Inform me what makes you and your companion weep?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: 'I weep for what your companions presented to me regarding taking the ransoms; their punishment was shown to me closer than this tree!'
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Following the Battle of Badr in 2 AH, seventy leading Meccan polytheists were captured alive. In classical Tafsir (al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir), the term 'Ithkhan' in Qur'an 8:67 signifies massive bloodshed, severe crushing, and complete battlefield subjugation of enemies before taking prisoners becomes permissible. The divine verses reproached the decision to prioritize worldly ransom wealth over total execution, confirming Umar's hawkish counsel, though Allah retroactively pardoned the army and made the captured war ransoms and spoils permanently lawful under Qur'an 8:69.
