Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Jihad, no. 2797 (Bab tamanni al-shahada)
Narrator: Abu Hurayra
Abu Hurayra reported: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'By Him in Whose hand is my soul, were it not that men among the believers would dislike being left behind me, and I cannot provide them with mounts, I would never remain behind any raiding party going out in the way of Allah. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I would love to be killed in the way of Allah, then brought to life, then killed, then brought to life, then killed, then brought to life, then killed.'
Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Jihad, no. 2829 (Bab al-shahada sab'un siwa al-qatl)
Narrator: Abu Hurayra
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The martyrs are five: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies of an abdominal disease, the drowned, the one who dies under a falling building, and the martyr in the way of Allah.'
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
Bukhari places 2797 in the chapter 'The wish for martyrdom' (tamanni al-shahada). The oath is repeated: the Prophet would never stay behind a sariyya if he could mount every volunteer, and he would love to be killed in the path, raised, and killed again. The same teaching is in Sahih Muslim. Bukhari 2829 expands the legal category of shahid beyond the battlefield: plague, abdominal disease, drowning, and death under rubble share the name, with 'the martyr in the way of Allah' listed last. The classical jurists distinguished the battlefield martyr (no washing, burial in his clothes, full otherworldly rank) from the other four, who receive the name and reward but are washed and shrouded as ordinary dead. The purchase-verse 9:111 is the Qur'anic frame of the battlefield wish; see that entry, and 'Paradise is under the shades of swords'.
