The prophetic traditions establishing that a slave who runs away from his master commits an act of Kufr (ingratitude/apostasy) and has his prayers invalidated until he returns to servitude. Sharh Sahih Muslim, on Hadith 68
Classical commentary — Al-Nawawi
[EN] His words 'he has committed Kufr' are interpreted by scholars as ingratitude for favors and violation of the master's legal rights... and the meaning of 'no prayer is accepted from him' is that he receives no divine reward for it, even if it discharges the formal ritual obligation.
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
In classical Islamic jurisprudence, the runaway slave (al-Abiq) is subject to dedicated legal treatises governing capture, detention, and return rewards (Ju'l). Under Islamic law, anyone who captures an escaped slave is legally obligated to apprehend and return them to their owner or state authorities. Classical commentators explained the harsh terminology of 'Kufr' and spiritual rejection as underscoring the severity of violating the property contract and master-servant hierarchy established under Sharīʿa.
