Classical commentary — Al-Sarakhsi
[EN] The nakedness ('awrah) of a female slave is like the 'awrah of a man: between the navel and the knee. This is because she goes out for her master's needs in working attire; so if her entire body were declared 'awrah, it would cause immense hardship for her and her master.
Context
Editorial note — descriptive only; no modern judgment is added.
In classical Sunni jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Hanbali, and classical Shafi'i rulings), the mandatory requirements of the veil (Hijab and Jilbab) stipulated in Qur'an 24:31 and 33:59 were exclusive privileges of free Muslim women (al-Hara'ir), intended to distinguish them from enslaved women (al-Ima'). The four schools established that a slave woman's body—including her head, hair, neck, arms, and in many rulings her chest and back—did not constitute 'awrah and could be viewed by non-mahram purchasers in slave markets and in public without sin.
